One of the top junior college basketball players in the nation said he is seriously considering playing for the University of Hawai'i next season.

Roderick Flemings, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound guard/forward, said he has narrowed his choices to two schools — Hawai'i and Kentucky.

"Nobody really expected Hawai'i to be in there, but it's down to Hawai'i and Kentucky now," Flemings said. "I'll probably decide after I visit Kentucky."

Flemings made his recruiting visit to Hawai'i last weekend, and said he is scheduled to visit Kentucky this weekend.

Flemings averaged 20.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.6 blocked shots per game last season as a sophomore at Weatherford (Texas) College. He was one of 10 players selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association's All-America first team.

Weatherford head coach Mark Osina, who has been at the Texas junior college since 1991, described Flemings as "the best player I've ever coached, by far."

"He can do it all," Osina said. "He can score it from anywhere, he rebounds, he can run, he can jump, he can defend. You name it."

Four former Rainbow Warriors came to UH via Weatherford: Nerijus Puida, Mindaugas Burneika, Vaidotas Peciukas and John Wilder.

Flemings said his recruiting trip to Hawai'i was "the greatest ever."

"Everything is so beautiful there," he said. "I've never been to anyplace like that before."

As a senior at DeSoto High in Dallas, Flemings led his team to the Texas Class 5A state championship. He was recruited by virtually every Big 12 program, including Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma.

He signed with Oklahoma State out of high school, but left during his freshman season. He averaged 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game as a reserve during his freshman season with the Cowboys.

He enrolled at North Texas for one semester, then transferred to Weatherford.

"I only had him for one year, and he carried us," Osina said of his team's 24-6 record.

Flemings was also being recruited by Georgetown, Connecticut, West Virginia and "just about everybody else," according to Osina.

"He's still got some academic work he has to do this summer, and I think some schools backed off because of that," Osina said. "But I think he's going to get it done, and he'll be a heck of a pick-up for who ever gets him."

CALIFORNIA FORWARD SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT

Brandon Adams signed his official letter of intent yesterday to play for the Rainbow Warriors.

The 6-7, 220-pound forward from Diablo Valley (Calif.) College made an oral commitment to play for UH earlier this week.

He averaged 13.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game last season.

"He's a very good, a very exciting player," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "He's going to be one of the guys the crowd will love to see play."

Adams has requested a redshirt season for 2008-09 to adjust academically to UH, and Nash said it will be granted.

"There's only a few guys we would do that for, and he's one of them," Nash said. "He legitimately wants to pursue a college degree and a redshirt year should help him get that."

Adams will be a junior in the 2009-10 season.
