Brian Derby resigns as Damien football coach

Advertiser Staff

Brian Derby, who coached one season at Damien Memorial School, has resigned and will be replaced on an interim basis by Wally Aina, the school's athletic director.

Damien's high school principal Mike Weaver said that Derby resigned because he felt Damien deserved a coach who could devote the time necessary to build the program. Derby's other commitments — he's a Honoluu Fire Department captain, an assistant coach with the Hosei University in Japan and director of his own clinic — made a long-term commitment difficult.

Aina coached at Damien from 1980 to 1993. He will remain as the school's athletic director.

Aina's associate head coach will be his son, Punahou Aina, who served as linebackers coach under Derby.

Derby played for UH from 1982-85. Although Derby has been an assistant at the high school and college (in Japan) levels, this was his first stint as head coach.
