Nick Rhodes pitched a complete game, and Brandon Haislet and Greg Garcia each had three hits and Hawai'i beat Nevada, 13-3, in seven innings today because of the Western Athletic Conference 10-run differential rule at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbows are assured of at least a split of the series. The nightcap is scheduled for 4:20 p.m. today.
Rhodes (3-4) allowed three runs, five hits and four walks with two strikeouts for the Rainbows (18-21 overall, 10-8 WAC).
Kyle Howe (5-1) went two-plus innings for the Wolf Pack (21-16, 8-6), allowing six runs, five hits and five walks with four strikeouts.
The Rainbows took advantage of Howe's control issues in a four-run second inning. Garcia walked with one out, stole second and scored on Landon Hernandez's double to left. Sean Montplaisir walked and Derek DuPree flied out to right, advancing Hernandez to third. Hee walked to load the bases and Haislet cleared them with a double to right.
The Wolf Pack cut their deficit in half because of control problems by Rhodes. David Ciarlo led off with a double to left and Kevin Rodland walked.
Both advanced on Jason Sadoian's sacrifice. Matt Bowman walked to load the bases and Jason Rodriguez followed with a two-run single to right that sent Bowman to second to pull Nevada to 4-2.
The Rainbows scored four in the third to increast their lead. Kevin Macdonald led off with a single to left and took third on Vinnie Catricala's double to right-center, ending Howe's day for Chris Garcia. Greg Garcia singled to left to score Macdonald and send Catricala to third. Montplaisir reached on a bunt single between third and the mound, but pitcher Garcia's throwing error to first allowed a run to score. But Hernandez was caught in a rundown between third and home, allowing Montplaisir to reach third.
Montplaisir was thrown out trying for home when DuPree reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third. Jon Hee doubled to left-center to scored DuPree to make it 8-2.
Nevada got a run back in the fifth. Rodland led off with a walk, but was forced at second on Sadoian's grounder to third. Sadoian reached third on Bowman's single off the third base bag and Rodriguez followed with a single to left to pull Nevada to 8-3. With runners at first and second, Kort lined out to first baseman Macdonald, who fired to Hee at second to double off Bowman to end the inning.
Hee led off with a single, Haislet walked and both scored on Van Doornum's double to center to make it 10-3. Chris Garcia was pulled for Bryan Suarez, who walked Macdonald. Catricala grounded to third for a double play, moving Van Doornum to third, where he scored on Garcia's single to center to make it 11-3.
A one out walk by Hee was followed by an RBI double by Haislet to make it 12-3. Haislet took third when Van Doornum grounded out to shortstop and scored on Macdonald's single to center to end the game on the 10-run rule.
