Crews from the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services will be conducting "Smoke Testing" of the wastewater collection system in Wahiawa residential areas April 22-25 and again from April 29 through May 2, 2008.

This is part of the department's continuing effort to prevent rainwater from entering the sewer system. Crews blow smoke into sewer lines, examine whether any smoke escapes, and record its location. The smoke used is non-toxic, harmless and odorless. The smoke is not a fire hazard and does not pose a health hazard to humans or pets.

Tests are used to locate broken pipes, illegal connections, open cleanouts and other paths for runoff to enter the sewer system. Runoff from heavy rain can overwhelm and surcharge the sewer system and treatment plants causing spills.

Streets to be smoke-tested are Glen Avenue, Glenview Place, Wonder View Place, Kanoelehua Place, Nahenahe Place, Royal Palm Drive, Uuku Street, Nichols Street, Turner Street, Clark Place, Eames Street, Kilea Place, Dole Road, Hakuone Street, Hakuone Place and Kinikohu Street.
