For many Island folks, Italy conjures an image of rolling hills dotted with olive trees, vineyards as far as the eye can see, the cobalt, turquoise and indigo of the Mediterranean and fields of sunflowers nodding in the soft Italian sunlight. What mental image does Honolulu — and, more specifically, Ala Moana — elicit from the Italians? For one Italian firm, it's all about the flowers and the fragrance.

Antica Farmacista, an Italian fragrance and apothecary collection, has interpreted Ala Moana in its latest home ambiance fragrance. They describe their Ala Moana fragrance this way: "night-blooming jasmine, plumeria, tuberose and gardenia create an intoxicating floral experience. Lush green notes add a crisp clean infusion that brighten this luscious scent."

The scent was introduced to coincide with the opening of Nordstrom's Ala Moana store and is exclusive to that location. It is packaged in an antique-inspired apothecary bottle filled with the fragrance. White birch reeds are inserted into the bottle to wick the scent up through the reeds and into the air, diffusing it subtly into a room. Cost for the 250 ml bottle is $58; for 500 ml, $88. The fragrance usually lasts several months, depending on how often the reeds are turned to increase the diffusion.
