Saint Louis wins, earns state baseball berth

Josh Saio and Tamatoa DeMello combined on a two-hitter to lift Saint Louis to a 3-1 victory over Mid-Pacific in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular-season baseball championship today at Ala Wai field.
The victory gave the Crusaders a berth in the state baseball tournament, set for May 7-10 at Les Murakami Stadium.
Both Saint Louis and Mid-Pacific finished the regular season with 13-1 records, forcing a one-game playoff for the title.
Saio pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out four. DeMello earned the save, striking out three.
DeMello also contributed as a hitter with a single, stolen base and run scored. Danny Higa also had a single, stolen base and also drove in a run. Keoni Haina homered.
All eight ILH baseball teams will now play in a double-elimination tournament to determine the other two ILH berths in the state tournament.
