Suspected auto thief arrested in Kahaluu

Police today arrested a man in Kahaluu on suspicion of stealing his former girlfriend's car.
The 20-year-old suspect was arrested at Ka'alaea Road and Kamehameha Highway at 4 p.m. for investigation of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, auto theft, petty misdemeanor reckless driving, a license violation and knocking down traffic lane markers.
The man is also being held on an outstanding $1,000 warrant.
According to police, the suspect reached into the 19-year-old woman's car, grabbed her cellphone and smashed it on the ground during a verbal argument at 3:10 p.m. When the woman got out of her car, the suspect got in and drove off.
Charges are pending.
