10-year sentence in '06 fatal crash

A man involved in a fatal car crash that killed his 23-year-old passenger two years ago was sentenced to 10 years behind bars yesterday for negligent homicide.
Brett Ragan was also ordered to pay $6,569.77.
Ragan was driving under the influence of alcohol in August 2006 when his Ford Mustang convertible overturned, killing his passenger. The Dole Street crash was his third DUI offense, the city prosecutor's office said yesterday.
ALLEGED MURDERER HELD ON $1M BAIL
The 30-year-old man accused of an execution-style shooting of another man at Keawa'ula Bay in Wai'anae made his first appearance in court yesterday and will appear at a preliminary hearing tomorrow.
Patrick W. Deguair Jr., who is being held on $1 million bail, was charged Saturday with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Jermaine Michael Duckworth, 24, whose body was found by a tourist March 27 on rocks below a cliff several hundred yards from the beach at the bay, also known as Yokohama Bay.
Court documents said Deguair restrained Duckworth at a home March 27 before driving him to Keawa'ula Bay, where "he shot him in the back of the head with a pistol equipped with a silencer and then pushed Jermaine off the cliff." Deguair was arrested Thursday night at the Pagoda Hotel.
He was in custody for a drug-related offense, when police questioned him about the murder.
INJURED DRIVER TAKEN TO QUEEN'S
HANALEI, Kaua'i — A 40-year-old Anahola man was in guarded condition at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu yesterday with injuries from a one-vehicle crash in Hanalei early Saturday morning, Kaua'i police said.
William Gonsalves was traveling eastbound on Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant about 1:17 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle crossed the center line, ran off the roadway and crashed into a state Department of Transportation road closure gate and a wire supporting a utility pole.
About 430 Hanalei-area customers of the Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative lost power until 4 a.m. Saturday, spokeswoman Anne Barnes said.
When police, fire and ambulance personnel arrived on the scene, Gonsalves was unconscious, Kaua'i spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
HIKER RESCUED AT MANOA FALLS
The Honolulu Fire Department yesterday brought out an injured male hiker from the Manoa Falls trail at 4:05 p.m.
HFD spokesman Capt. Frank Johnson said the hiker, who is in his late 40s, hurt his right arm when he slipped and fell about 25 feet off the trail. Firefighters were dispatched about 2:30 p.m.
Rescue specialists reached the man and flew him to Manoa District Park by helicopter.
DOWNTOWN BANK HEIST 8TH OF YEAR
The Downtown branch of Territorial Savings Bank was robbed yesterday of an undisclosed amount of cash by a man who fled on foot.
The robbery at 1000 Bishop St. was reported at 3:09 p.m. Police said the robber approached a teller and demanded money.
It was the eighth bank robbery on O'ahu this year and first since Feb. 5. Police have charged suspects in six cases this year.
TWO CHARGED IN KAPOLEI CAR CASE
Two Kapolei men have been charged with misdemeanor offenses after being found in a stolen car.
Daniel Kepanu Mano-Kila, 19, and Tyron Antonio, 18, were each charged with unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
Mano-Kila and Antonio were passengers in a vehicle that attracted the attention of police while parked at a Tesoro station at 94-120 Farrington Highway.
POLICE WANT INFO ON PUNA RIP-OFFS
Hawai'i County police are asking for the public's help in getting information on burglaries in Puna last month.
Police responded to several burglaries in the Hawaiian Beaches and Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivisions during the first half of March. The burglars took flat-screen televisions, other electronics, Persian rugs, an ivory tusk, sterling silverware and heirloom jewelry.
