Kaua'i Department of Public Works personnel from the Hanalei baseyard today buried the remains of a whale at 'Anini Beach on the island's north shore.
The carcass, about 6 feet long and 6 feet wide, had drifted offshore overnight from 'Anini Beach to a point known to surfers as "Wires" and led to Ocean Safety officials advising beachgoers today to stay out of the water at Kalihiwai Beach due to shark sightings.
The Public Works crew retrieved the carcass from the reef today and buried it about 25 to 30 feet above the high water mark, said Kaua'i County spokeswoman Mary Daubert.
