DUI arrests up, major traffic accidents down on Big Island

Major accidents on the Big Island have decreased by 12 percent from a year ago, but drunk driving arrests are up 10 percent, Big Island police said.
Thirty-two drivers were arrested for DUI on the Big Island last week, nine who were involved in crashes and three under the age of 21. So far this year there have been 376 DUI arrests compared with 343 during the same period last year.
There have also been 509 major accidents so far this year compared with 578 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 12 during the same period last year.
