Freshman Alex Capaul and senior Josh Schneider combined on a four-hitter and Hawai'i beat San Jose State, 6-2, today to take 3 of 4 of the Western Athletic Conference baseball series at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

Capaul (1-3) went five innings, allowing two runs, two hits and five walks and three strikeouts for the Rainbows (13-20 overall, 5-7 WAC). Schneider followed with four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout for his first save.

The Rainbows won their first WAC series of the season after splitting one with Fresno State and getting swept at Sacramento State.

Scott Sobczak (2-1) gave up three runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings for the Spartans (15-13, 6-9).

The Rainbows got on the board in the second. Jeff Van Doornum singled with one out and Kevin Macdonald was hit by a pitch. Vinnie Catricala reached safely when he grounded to short that forced Macdonald at second. With runners at the corners, Greg Garcia's RBI single moved Catricala to second, where he scored on Landon Hernandez's RBI single to make it 2-0 against Sobczak.

The Spartans got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second. Sonny Garza singled with one out and took second when Alex Aguilera grounded out to short. But Capaul walked three consecutive batters to force in a run before retiring Kyle Bellows on a fly to right to leave the bases loaded and preserve UH's lead at 2-1.

Hawai'i got the run back in the third. DuPree led off with a single and two outs later took third on Van Doornum's single. Macdonald delivered an RBI single that sent Van Doornum to third to increase UH's lead to 3-1 against Sobczak. After falling behind 1-0, Sobczak was pulled for Spencer Snodgrass, who walked Catricala before striking out Garcia to end the inning.

The Rainbows kept up the scoring in the fourth. Henandez reached on a two-base throwing error by the shortstop, took third when Sean Monplaisir grounded out to first and scored on DuPree's single to left to make it 4-1.

The Spartans got a run in the fifth. With two outs, John Shaffer walked and Craig Hertler was hit by a pitch. With Corey Valine at the plate, catcher Hernandez's pick-off throw to second was errant, allowing Shaffer to advance to third, where he scored on Valine's single to short to make it 4-2.

But the Rainbows got that run back in the sixth. Catricala led off with a single and one out later, stole second. After Hernandez flied out to right, Catricala took third on Montplaisir's single to first and scored on DuPree's single to center to increase UH's lead to 5-2.

Hawai'i added a run in the ninth. Haislet walked, stole second when Van Doornum struck out and scored when Macdonald reached first safely on a throwing error by the pitcher to make it 6-2.
