DENVER — The Colorado Rockies looked great in their home opener — but only on the giant video screen.

The Rockies celebrated their NL championship yesterday with a pregame jubilee of fireworks, fly-bys and flashbacks, then played nothing like the charmed team that won its first pennant six months ago.

Arizona right-hander Micah Owings (1-0) struck out a career-best nine batters and allowed just one run and two hits over 6 2/3 innings in the D'Backs' 8-1 win over Colorado before a sell-out crowd of 49,233 at Coors Field.

Chad Qualls and Juan Cruz completed the two-hitter, and Mark Reynolds homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Diamondbacks, who watched the Rockies celebrate a sweep of the NL championship series the last time they were in town.

"We respect what they did last year," Reynolds said. "At the same time it's over with and we forgot about it that night. It's a new season."

After Willy Taveras doubled leading off the first, Owings retired 17 straight batters before walking Taveras with two outs in the sixth.

Mark Redman (0-1) allowed five runs, four earned, in 5 2/3 innings for Colorado.

"We didn't give the fans too much to cheer about," Rockies first baseman Todd Helton said with a shrug.

ASTROS 4, CUBS 3

J.R. Towles homered in the fourth, Miguel Tejada added a go-ahead triple in the eighth and visiting Houston beat Chicago. Towles' two-run drive off Rich Hill gave Houston a 2-0 lead, and that held until Geovany Soto's tying, two-run single in the seventh. Houston immediately got two runs in the eighth off Jon Lieber (0-1).

BREWERS 13, GIANTS 4

Bill Hall homered twice and had a career-high six RBIs, leading host Milwaukee to a rout of San Francisco in its home opener. Prince Fielder went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, and Gabe Kapler drove in a pair of runs. Carlos Villanueva (1-0) tied a career high with six strikeouts, going 5 1/3 innings.

MARLINS 5, PIRATES 4

Mike Jacobs homered off reliever Franquelis Osoria (0-1) leading off the ninth to give host Florida its second walk-off win of the young season. Jacobs sent Osoria's 1-1 pitch over the right-field wall. On Tuesday, Robert Andino hit his first major league home run in the bottom of the 10th to beat the New York Mets, 5-4.

CARDINALS 5, NATIONALS 4

Braden Looper allowed a run and five hits in six innings, and Rick Ankiel hit a two-run homer in host St. Louis' win over Washington. Odalis Perez (0-1) allowed five runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.

PHILLIES 8, REDS 4

Chase Utley drove in three runs with a pair of homers, helping visiting Philadelphia beat Cincinnati. Kyle Kendrick (1-0) gave up four runs, eight hits and a pair of walks in five-plus innings.

DODGERS 7, PADRES 1

Hiroki Kuroda was brilliant in his big league debut, holding host San Diego to three hits in seven innings with a mix of fastballs and sliders, plus an occasional splitter. Kuroda (1-0) also walked and scored on Russell Martin's two-run single in the seventh. A meltdown by the Padres' bullpen led to six runs that inning.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

WHITE SOX 8, TIGERS 5

A.J. Pierzynski drove in five runs with three hits, including a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the seventh inning that led visiting Chicago over Detroit. The Tigers, the only winless team in the major leagues, are 0-4 for the first time since dropping their first nine games in 2003. That year, they lost an AL-record 119 times.

TAMPA BAY 13, NEW YORK 4

Pinch-hitter Shawn Riggans hit a three-run double in the third, Carlos Pena a three-run homer in a seven-run eighth inning, and visiting Tampa Bay roughed up New York youngster Ian Kennedy (0-1) for six runs. Andy Sonnanstine (1-0) allowed four runs in six innings and struck out four.

TWINS 4, ROYALS 3

Carlos Gomez went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases and Scott Baker recovered from a sluggish first two innings as host Minnesota handed Kansas City (3-1) its first loss. Baker (1-0) gave up three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 6, RED SOX 3

Frank Thomas doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Shaun Marcum struck out eight and host Toronto improved to 24-8 in home openers before a sellout crowd of 50,171 against Boston. Marcum (1-0) allowed three runs and three hits and walked just one over seven innings.

ORIOLES 7, MARINERS 4

Ramon Hernandez broke out of a hitless funk by going 3 for 4 with a home run, and host Baltimore also got homers from Kevin Millar and Melvin Mora to beat Seattle. Former Mariners reliever George Sherrill, now Baltimore's closer, got the final two outs for his second save.

ATHLETICS 6, INDIANS 3

Justin Duchscherer allowed one run in five innings in his first start since 2003, helping host Oakland beat Cleveland before leaving the game with biceps tendinitis. Duchscherer (1-0) struck out six and walked two. He left in the sixth after giving up back-to-back singles to Kelly Shoppach and Grady Sizemore.

RANGERS 11, ANGELS 6

Ben Broussard hit a grand slam, Kason Gabbard (1-0) threw seven shutout innings and Texas spoiled Los Angeles' home opener. The Rangers built an 11-0 lead and the Angels didn't score until the ninth, when Howie Kendrick started a six-run outburst with a two-run triple off Dustin Nippert.
