Harlan Arakawa isn't one to rest on an award.

Arakawa recently received a pair of them from the National Wrestling Coaches Association for his years of service and for the victories he has recorded.

While he is no longer the head coach at Campbell High School, Arakawa still helps out as an assistant coach.

"I can't get him away from it," says his wife, Collette. "He's just not willing to give it up yet."

Arakawa received the 25-year Service Award and an additional award for winning 100 dual meets in his career in St. Louis, Mo., on March 19, the day before the NCAA Wrestling Championships began. "I actually had 30 years as a head coach and, with assistant coaching and everything, I actually had 35 years," he said.

Arakawa wrestled for Waipahu High as a student and then coached at Waipahu from 1977 to 1985. He then was the head coach at Campbell from 1987 to 2007.

He was 120-166-6 in his head coaching career.

He still works in the Outreach Department at Campbell, and plans to keep busy in wrestling.

"A lot depends on what retirement brings," said Arakawa, who is planning on working at Campbell for a few more years. "We're trying to start up the Hawai'i chapter of the Wrestling Hall of Fame. I may want to help more with that."
