Gerken, Conroy team up to win Big Island Candies Scotch 4-Ball

David Gerken of The King Kamehameha Golf Club and Bill Conroy of Wailea Golf Club shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round alternate shot format to go with a best-ball 65 in the first round for a total 9-under 135 to capture the Aloha Section PGA Big Island Candies Scotch 4-Ball Championship at The Club at Hokuli'a on the Big Island Sunday and Monday.
The 36-hole stroke-play team event, with 26 teams of Island professionals, offered a $13,500 purse. The winning team earned $3,500 and points toward Governor's Cup selection and Section PGA Player of the Year.
First-round leaders Brad Bowen of Kahili Golf Club and Joe Phengsavath of Mid-Pacific Country Club tied for second with a two-day total of 5-under-par 139 (64-75), along with 2004 and 2005 champions John Lynch of GolfTEC and Beau Yokomoto of Pearl Country Club (66-73).

Ko Olina Golf Club will host a free "Power Golf" clinic and club demo Saturday at 9 a.m., taught by PGA Teaching Professional Tommy Hines and Director of Golf, Greg Nichols. There also will be a free club fitting demo from 10 a.m. to noon.
The PGA of America will hold a Play Golf America Day at Ko Olina Golf Club on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This day of golf activities for the entire family is free. There will be expert instruction to golfers of all levels, top golf club companies providing demo clubs, games and contests, free hot dogs and thousands of dollars of door prizes. Le Jardin Academy will host its 14th annual golf tournament May 5 at Mid-Pacific Country Club, with a noon shotgun start. Entry fee is $525 per threesome or $175 per player, which includes green fee, cart, lunch and dinner. Deadline to register is Monday. Information: 261-0707, ext. 281.
