WAILUKU — The Baldwin High School baseball team took over first place in Maui Interscholastic League Division I play with a 2-0 win over Kamehameha-Maui on yesterday at Maehara Stadium.
The Bears (7-0) got a combined five-hitter on the mound from Brock Shishido and Skyler Cabacungan. Shishido got his second win in five days with six shut-out innings in which he gave up four hits and struck out two. Cabacungan got his second save in five days with a one-hit, one-strikeout seventh.
''That was a real big game,'' Baldwin coach Jon Viela said to The Maui News after his team moved a half-game in front of idle Maui (6-0). ''Whenever our pitchers get us to the fifth inning, I know that Sklyer can close it. He's tough. We have lot of confidence in him. Brock pitched really well tonight.''
Kamehameha-Maui (4-3) lost for the third straight game, two of which have been shutouts. Isaiah Kaneakua was the hard-luck loser after he pitched a six-inning four-hitter and struck out four.
Sophomore shortstop Jordan Negrini led the Bears with a single and a double at the plate.
The Bears scored what proved to be the winning run on a passed ball in the third inning that plated Todd Miyazono, who was hit by a pitch.
Baldwin got its final run on a sacrifice fly by Gabe Kahoohanohano in the fourth that drove in Negrini, who singled.
