Rotting Thomas Square tree to be removed today
A decaying earpod tree at the ewa-makai corner of Thomas Square will be removed today beginning at 7:30 a.m., the city said in a press release.
The two mauka lanes on South King Street will be blocked from Ward Avenue to Victoria Street. Pedestrians are encouraged to find other routes because the sidewalk on Ward and South King will be blocked.
The tree may be as much as 75 years old. During pruning last year, a cavity was discovered in the tree's trunk, and an arborist recommended removal of the tree.
"We're always reluctant to remove a tree, particularly one as prominent as this one," said city parks director Lester Chang. "But trees do have a life span and we're very concerned that the size of the cavity means the tree poses a danger to public safety and property."
The Outdoor Circle was consulted, and a representative inspected the tree.
The city plans to plant a replacement tree on the site.
