HOE! PADDLING CHAMPIONSHIP

The Moloka'i Hoe — the championship race of the O'ahu Canoe Racing Association — is set for Oct. 7 this year. The race begins at Hale O Lono harbor on Moloka'i and ends with festivities and excitement shortly after midday at Duke Kahanamoku Beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Regarded as the men's world championship of long-distance outrigger canoe racing, the big paddle covers 41 miles of open ocean, and Hawai'i teams compete against crews from such far-flung places as Tahiti (Shell Va'a of Tahiti won last year), Japan, Singapore, Italy, Australia and California. www.ohcra.com.

THEY SELL SHELLFISH BY THE SEASHORE

Now's the time to begin planning for a trip to Prince Edward Island off the Atlantic Coast of Canada, and the 2008 International Shellfish Festival, held annually the third weekend in September. The event, on the waterfront in picturesque Charlottetown, is anchored by "The Biggest Kitchen Party in Atlantic Canada," with entertainment and food prepared by celebrity chefs. There are daily shellfish-cooking demonstrations and food booths.
