Hale'iwa archer Shipman 10th at U.S. team trial event

Hale'iwa's Phyllis Shipman, who turned 64 last month, finished 10th on the first day of the First Nomination Shoot at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Conyers, Ga. Shipman's performance yesterday was good enough for her to advance to today's second round.
Shipman returned to the sport in 1996 after retiring as Mililani Uka Elementary principal. She came up just short of qualifying for the 2004 Olympics. She would have been the oldest athlete on the U.S. team. Shipman was an archery All-American in 1964 and '65 at Pennsylvania College for Women.
Jennifer Nichols placed first in yesterday's 70-meter round with a score of 1,290.
The top 16 men and top 16 women from the 70m shoot will be ranked 1 to 16 based on their order of finish for the round-robin series today and tomorrow. The top-seeded archers shoot against the lower-seeded shooters in the opening round.
Each of the 32 athletes also earned a spot at the Second Nomination Shoot in April. This weekend's round-robin shoot will determine each individual shooter's ranking for the Second Nomination Shoot.
SURFING
SULLIVAN ELIMINATED
Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach was eliminated in the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest yesterday.
The fourth round and quarterfinals were run yesterday in 3- to 4-foot waves at Hossegor, France.
South Africa's Greg Emslie defeated Sullivan, 14.5-9.16. Emslie received a score of 8.33 midway through the 30-minute heat to give him a lead he would not relinquish.
Sullivan was the last Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest.
Emslie also won his quarterfinal heat to advanced to the semifinals.
Australia's Mick Fanning, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, also advanced to the semifinals.
The contest was scheduled to run this weekend at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.
VOLLEYBALL
UH-HILO, BYUH WIN
Hillary Hurley pounded 18 kills and Josimara Pinheiro added 17 as UH-Hilo beat Chaminade, 21-30, 30-15, 30-24, 30-26, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at McCabe Gym.
The Vulcans improve to 3-0 in league play and 9-4 overall.
Vanja Radanovic and Evelyn Bluthenthal each had 14 kills for Chaminade (1-2, 8-3).
At the Blaisdell Center last night, Noelle Filimoeatu had 19 kills and Agnes Tuilevuka added 18 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Hawai'i Pacific, 30-27, 30-28, 30-25.
BYUH improved to 2-1 in conference matches and 6-5 overall.
Antje Buskies led HPU (0-4, 5-9) with 16 kills and Kelly Balanay added 13.
TENNIS
BYUH PLAYERS IN FINAL
Brigham Young-Hawai'i tennis players Maggie Deng and Elwin Li won two matches yesterday to advance to the women's final of the Wilston/ITA West Regional in Pomona, Calif.
Deng beat Hawai'i Pacific University's Nina Mihova, 6-2, 6-4, and another HPU player, Elena Hudzikova, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals. Li beat HPU's Ingrid Cseh, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and Ivana Comsa, of Cal State L.A., 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.
In men's final, HPU's Hendrik Bode will face UC San Diego's Bijan Moallemi for the title today. Bode beat UC San Diego's Blake Meister, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals, and got by another UCSD foe, Eric Rubens, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
