A botched burglary at a home in Huelo, Maui, Monday night sent two people to a hospital, one of them in critical condition from a gunshot wound.
Maui police said officers responded about 8:45 p.m. to a report that a gunshot was heard at a home on Door of Faith Road.
A 29-year-old man and two boys, both 17, had entered the home to burglarize it, police said.
A 43-year-old man who lived in the home confronted them with a gun and at some point, the adult intruder was shot in the stomach, police said.
Despite his wound, the man was able to use an object he found in the home to attack the occupant before fleeing with the two youths, police said.
Sometime later, a man with a gunshot wound in the stomach was taken by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room.
The man underwent surgery yesterday and was in critical condition but expected to recover.
The home's resident was at the same hospital yesterday, being treated for severe facial fractures. He was in satisfactory condition.
The two boys were arrested and released to parental custody, police said.
