There's no question the city's multi-billion-dollar transit project will have a huge impact on communities along the planned route and beyond.
And perhaps the most significant impact involves development along the transit line — particularly at the 20 or so transit stations planned for communities stretching from Kapolei to Honolulu.
The city is right in recognizing successful transit-oriented development should contain a mix of establishments that allow people to live, work and play within walking distance of these stations. And community participation is essential.
Development around these stations will define the look and feel of these communities for years to come. It's important to recognize that each of these areas have unique needs.
The city is working on a schedule of public meetings on transit-oriented development. So far, one meeting has been scheduled, which will focus on the two transit stations planned for the Waipahu area.
Successful transit-oriented development will take public input — it's up to you to be part of the process. It's your community, your voice is key.
