'Joy Luck Club' to lead reading effort

Local organizers of "The Big Read," a national campaign to promote reading, have chosen Amy Tan's book "The Joy Luck Club" as the focus of several events over the next several weeks to encourage reading.
Guest readers will read the "Joy Luck Club" each Wednesday at noon through Nov. 21 at the Hawai'i State Library. A theater-style performance reading of the book is scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Richardson Theater at Fort Shafter.

The campaign, led by the Hawai'i Capital Cultural District, has received $20,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts and $24,900 from the state Department of Human Services in federal welfare money. "The Big Read" is an NEA initiative.
"There's nothing, to me, quite like a book," Gov. Linda Lingle said yesterday at a news conference at the state Capitol announcing the reading program.
Correction: The National Endowment for the Arts provided $20,000 to promote "The Big Read," which encourages reading. The amount was incorrect in a previous version of this story.
