PASADENA, Calif. — Chris Markey rushed for 193 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown run during a hectic fourth quarter, and UCLA outlasted Washington, 44-31, last night.

The Bruins (3-1, 2-0 Pac-10) bounced back from a humbling loss at Utah the previous weekend.

Washington's defense had a poor second half for the second game in a row, with the Bruins pulling away from a 10-10 halftime tie.

UCLA came up with three long scoring plays in the second half — Dennis Keyes' interception return for a 60-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, Markey's long dash, and Matt Slater's 80-yard kickoff return.

The Bruins needed it because Washington's Jake Locker threw for three of his four touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But each time he got the Huskies close, the Bruins responded.

Washington (2-2, 0-1) closed to seven points twice in the final quarter, but the Bruins quickly opened the lead back to 14.

Locker, a redshirt freshman, rushed for 92 yards and completed 17 of 36 passes for 216 yards, with two interceptions.

Markey carried 14 times for the Bruins, one a 66-yarder to set up a field goal in the first quarter. Kahlil Bell rushed for 109 yards on 27 carries, including an 8-yard touchdown run in the third.

UCLA was outscored 37-6 in the second half of its 44-6 loss at previously winless Utah last weekend that dropped the Bruins from No. 11 out of the national rankings.

Washington plays at Hawai'i Dec. 1 in the regular-season finale for both.

NORTHERN ARIZONA 34, NORTHERN COLORADO 14

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Lance Kriesien threw for 216 yards and scored two touchdowns on short runs to lead the host Lumberjacks (2-2) over the Bears (0-4) in the Big Sky Conference opener for both.

Northern Colorado, which lost to Hawai'i, 63-6, in its season opener, now has a 12-game losing streak and still is seeking its first Big Sky win in the school's second season in the conference.

UNLV 27, UTAH 0

LAS VEGAS — Frank Summers rushed for 190 yards and scored three touchdowns to help the Rebels (2-2, 1-0 Mountain West) end an 11-game losing streak to the Utes (1-3, 0-2).

It was the first time Utah was shut out since a 38-0 loss to Arizona State in 1993. It was UNLV's first shutout since 2000 against North Texas. That score was also 38-0.

UNLV lost to Hawai'i, 49-14, Sept. 15.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS 42, IDAHO 35

MOSCOW, Idaho — Justin Anderson ran for 167 yards and a touchdown, and Dan Nicholson threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Huskies (1-3) from the Mid American Conference over the Vandals (1-3).

Idaho's Eric Greenwood recovered an onside kick with 59 seconds left, and the Vandals reached the NIU 17, but Larry English sacked Nathan Enderle to end the game.

Idaho hosts Hawai'i Saturday.

AUBURN 55, NEW MEXICO STATE 20

AUBURN, Ala. — A week after being booed and benched, Brandon Cox passed for 135 yards and a touchdown and the Tigers (2-2), leading 21-20 at halftime, broke it open in the second half to defeat the Aggies (2-2).

Ben Tate rushed 21 times for 112 yards and a touchdown, while Mario Fannin ran the ball 15 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns, including a 67-yarder in the fourth quarter.

New Mexico State plays at Hawai'i Oct. 27.

SAN JOSE STATE 23, UTAH STATE 20

LOGAN, Utah — David Richmond caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Adam Tafralis with 53 seconds left in the game, helping the Spartans (1-3, 1-0 WAC) extend the Aggies' (0-4, 0-1) losing streak to 10.

Tafralis was 35 of 48 for a career-high 426 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans, who gained 524 yards in the game.

San Jose State hosts Hawai'i Oct. 12.
