TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Medium," 9 p.m., NBC. After tonight, "Medium" goes back on the shelf for a while. It's expected back on Sundays, after football season. First, here's a rerun of a pivotal episode. The public finally learns Allison is a psychic, working for the prosecutor's office; that discovery will change her life and work. Meanwhile, "Medium" wraps up its three-parter with Jason Priestley as someone who may or may not have been wrongly accused of murder.
"Saving Private Ryan," 5 p.m., TNT. On Sunday, PBS will launch Ken Burns' brilliant documentary series, "The War." First, here's Hollywood's best shot at World War II. Everything works beautifully, including the wrenching D-Day sequence and the scenes that bookend the film. Steven Spielberg provided stunning visual sweep and cast it perfectly. That includes Tom Hanks as the squad leader, trying to rescue Matt Damon.
OF NOTE
"Cold Mountain" (2003), 5 p.m., Bravo. Long, sprawling, sometimes painful, this Civil War film is inconsistent, but has moments of immense beauty. Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") directed beautifully, getting great work from Nicole Kidman and an Oscar-winning Renee Zellwegger.
"CSI: Miami," 7 p.m., CBS. In this rerun, a Marine recruiter has been killed. Was that related to someone he recruited?
"Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" (2004), 8 and 10 p.m., ABC Family. This isn't one of Lindsay Lohan's top-regarded films. After moving from Manhattan to New Jersey, she fumes about a snob and obsesses on a rock star.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Earlier, Greg shot someone in self-defense. In this rerun, the brother of the man he shot is connected with a shooting.
"Law & Order: Criminal Intent," 8 p.m., NBC. In a rerun, a friend has radiation poisoning; now Logan tries to find the killer before the friend dies.
"Holes" (2003), 9 p.m., Disney Channel. In a terrific night for movies, this may be the best of all. It's a whimsical fable, aimed at kids, but worthy of adults; Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive"), directed beautifully.
"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. Jake Gyllenhaal hosts this rerun; The Shins are musical guests.
