BUSINESS BRIEFS
Gas prices higher in Honolulu, Hilo

Advertiser Staff

Average gasoline prices moved higher in Honolulu and Hilo this week, according to AAA Hawaii.

In Honolulu, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas rose to $3.10. In Hilo, the price climbed 2 cents to $3.21.

AAA reported a gallon of regular cost $3.56 in Wailuku, or 1 cent less than last week.

"Gas prices in Hawai'i have started to catch up with the price increases seen around the nation for the past few weeks," said AAA Hawaii Regional Manager Richard Velazquez, in a news release. "Hawai'i and three other states have the highest state average prices in the nation at more than $3 a gallon."

KHNL-8'S HD SIGNAL DROPPED

Local NBC-affiliate KHNL-8's high-definition signal has been dropped from DISH Network's Hawai'i satellite TV lineup.

A DISH Network spokeswoman said the decision was made following customer complaints about the quality of the satellite TV provider's rebroadcast of KHNL's HD signal. The issue involves DISH Network's decision to receive KHNL's HD broadcast over the air rather than via a direct fiber-optic link, said John Fink, general manager for KHNL. That has led to fluctuations in the quality of DISH Network's rebroadcast, he said.

KHNL's standard-definition channel is still available on DISH Network. Fink said there were no discussions with DISH Network about restoring availability of KHNL HD on the satellite provider's service.

Cyanotech shares closed down 6 cents at 80 cents yesterday.

PLAZA CLUB TO HOLD CHARITY DINNER

Downtown Honolulu's Plaza Club is hosting a charity dinner Oct. 19 as part of the 50th anniversary of ClubCorp, the company that operates Plaza Club.

The dinner is part of a broad fundraising effort by Dallas-based ClubCorp, which is hosting golf tournaments at 94 country clubs and dinners at 56 business and sports clubs. The company expects to host 15,000 golfers, serve 5,000 diners and raise $3 million.

Komen for the Cure and a ClubCorp employee crisis assistance fund. The MDA is to receive 40 percent of proceeds, with the other groups splitting the balance equally.

The Plaza Club event starts at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers and a silent auction, with dinner and entertainment from 7:30 to 9, followed by dancing until midnight. Cost is $124. Formal attire is required. The event is open to the public.
