Dwyer makes cut at LPGA qualifying

Kailua's Bridget Keala Dwyer struggled to a second-round 77 at the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament yesterday, but it was just enough to make the cut and play the final two days in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Dwyer's total of 6-over-par 150 gives her a share of 69th. A total of 83 players made the cut, at 150. That did not include Maui's Shayna Miyajima, whose round of 80 yesterday at Mission Hills Country Club left her three shots short.

Yani Tseng, 18, of Taiwan and Kelly Lagedrost, 28, of Florida are tied for the lead at 140.

Ashleigh Simon of South Africa, Annie Young of Utah, Song Yi Choi of South Korea and Jennifer Ackerson of Texas all enter the third round tied for third at 142.

The top 30 players and ties at the end of 72 holes advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, at LPGA International in Florida, Nov. 28 to Dec. 2.

ISLE WOMEN 10TH, MEN 43RD IN TEAM EVENT

Hawai'i's women finished 10th while the men dropped to 43rd in the final round of the USGS State Team Championship golf tournament yesterday in Woodlands, Texas.

Arizona's women and the men's team from Texas won the three-round tournament at The Club at Carlton Woods par-72 course.

Hayley Young of Honolulu led the Hawai'i women with scores of 78-79-75. The team scores was 464, while Arizona finished with 437.

In men's play, Henry Park led the Hawai'i men with scores of 74-76-74. The Hawai'i team score was 450, 28 stokes behind the winning Texas squad.

LINGLE RELEASES FUNDS FOR IMPROVEMENTS

Gov Linda Lingle has released more than $12 million for repairs and safety improvements to Aloha Stadium.

"As our state's largest outdoor arena, Aloha Stadium allows residents and visitors to enjoy a wide variety of events," Lingle said in a press statement. "We need to take a preventive approach when it comes to safety repairs and maintenance."

The multi-purpose facility was built in 1975 and is home to University of Hawai'i football games, high school games, the Pro Bowl, and has been the site of numerous concerts.

Improvements covered by $12,430,000 in funding will include cleaning and recoating corroded steel surfaces; reinforcing the pedestrian concourse bridges to minimize vibration; installing additional handrails in stair walkways to reduce the risk of injury; improving electrical and other existing utilities; and performing preventative structural upgrades and other renovations needed to ensure the stadium's structural certification.

Design and planning for this phase of improvements is in progress.

Work is scheduled to begin in early 2008.

LEBEN DEFEATS MARTIN WITH THIRD-ROUND KO

Hawai'i-based fighter Chris Leben defeated Chicago's Terry Martin in a middleweight bout of the Ultimate Fight Night card on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

Leben knocked out Martin with a left hook, 3 minutes, 56 seconds into the third round. The bout was scheduled for three five-minute rounds.

Leben, who improved to 17-4, is originally from Oregon, but recently moved to Hawai'i to become the head instructor at the Icon Sport Gym in Niu Valley.

In related mixed martial arts news, Kailua's Scott Junk is scheduled to face California's Christian Wellisch on the undercard of the UFC 76 card tomorrow at Anaheim, Calif.

It will be Junk's debut in the prestigious Ultimate Fighting Championship organization. The heavyweight bout is not expected to be shown on the pay-per-view telecast.

BYUH MEN LOSE TO UC SANTA CRUZ, 2-1

Jeremy Abrams and Harry Abraham each scored as UC Santa Cruz beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-1, yesterday in a men's soccer match at Santa Cruz, Calif.

Brian Noguera scored for BYUH, which is 4-4 and will take on Notre Dame de Namur in a Pacific West Conference match tomorrow in Belmont, Calif.

BYUH WOMEN TOP DIXIE STATE, 4-3

Brigham Young-Hawai'i scored all of its goals in the first half to beat Dixie State College, 4-3, in a women's soccer match yesterday at St. George, Utah.

Sarah Welty scored and added an assist for BYUH. Jill Haar, Ashley Hunter and Amber Nordhagen also scored for BYUH.

Goalkeeper Becky Ploeger had four saves for the Seasiders.

The Seasiders improved to 4-2-1.
