Hawaii 10th in men's state golf

Bradley Shigezawa opened with a 2-under-par 70 yesterday as Hawai'i shared 10th place after the first round of the Men's State Team Championship at The Woodlands, Texas.

Henry Park shot 74 and Taeksoo Kim 78, with the two lowest scores counting toward the team total.

Hawai'i (144) is seven strokes behind leader Texas in the 52-team field. Alabama and Tennessee are tied for second at 140.

Shigezawa is in a seven-way tie for eighth individually. Thomas Smith of Tennessee and Will Swift of Alabama share the lead with 137.

In the Women's State Team Championship, Hawai'i was alone in 16th with a 155 score — 10 strokes behind leader Louisiana in the 51-team field. North Carolina and Tennessee are tied for second at 146.

Representing Hawai'i in the United States Golf Association tournament are Nicole Sakamoto (77), Hayley Young (78) and Hee Sue Condry (91).

BYUH WOMEN WIN; THREE OTHER TEAMS LOSE

Hailey McKee, Stefanie Wright and Sarah Welty scored as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Grand Canyon, 3-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's opener at Phoenix, Ariz.

Grand Canyon won the men's match, 3-0.

In other PacWest openers yesterday, Notre Dame de Namur swept Chaminade at Belmont, Calif.

The Argonauts won the women's match, 5-0, and the men's match, 2-0, despite 10 saves by Chaminade's Darren Smith.
