Osorio, Haole try to lift SMU

The third-ranked Southern Methodist men's soccer team suffered back-to-back losses against defending national champion UC Santa Barbara and Washington at last week's Nike/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational at Albuquerque, but hopes to turn its fortunes with home games against Centenary tomorrow and Oral Roberts Friday.

Freshman midfielder Kekoa Osorio (Kamehameha '07 of Honolulu) has appeared in five matches with one assist.

Freshman forward/midfielder Keoki Haole (Kapolei '07 of Kapolei) has played in two matches. Freshman midfielder Cameron Holm (Hawai'i Baptist '06 of Kailua) is also on the roster.

The Mustangs finished 17-2-4 last season on their way to a second straight Conference USA regular-season crown and their first league tournament title.

  • Washington freshman goalkeeper Stephen Fung ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) started and made four saves for the Huskies in a 2-0 win over SMU.

  • Saint Mary's (Calif.) junior midfielder Justin Kim (Mililani '04 of Mililani) had an assist in the Gaels' 2-1 win over Wright State Sunday.

  • Vanguard junior midfielder Tom Culver (Maryknoll '03 of Kailua) had a goal and two assists in wins over Bethel College and Cedarville last week. The Lions (5-1) rose from 24th to 14th in this week's NAIA Top 25 poll.

    FOOTBALL

  • Colorado senior linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) had 11 tackles in a 16-6 loss to Florida State Saturday. Dizon leads the nation, averaging over 16 tackles per game.

  • Navy junior quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04 of Kapolei) left Saturday's game against Ball State early after he sprained both ankles. The Cardinals topped the Midshipmen, 34-31, in overtime. Kaheaku-Enhada had 117 rushing yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.

  • California sophomore defensive end Tyson Alualu (Saint Louis '05 of Honolulu) had five tackles and was in on a sack in the Bears' 42-12 rout of Louisiana Tech.

  • Utah senior linebacker Malakai Mokofisi (Kailua '03 of La'ie), freshman defensive end Nai Fotu (Kahuku '07 of La'ie) and sophomore linebacker Kepa Gaison (Kamehameha '05 of Kane'ohe) each registered a tackle in the Utes' 44-6 upset of then-No. 11 UCLA. The Bruins fell out of both the Associated Press and USA Today Top 25 polls this week.

  • Linfield senior receiver Josh Vierra (Kamehameha '04 of Kahalu'u) caught a pair of touchdown passes in the Wildcats' 52-42 win over Hardin-Simmons Saturday.

    Senior punter Stan Fisher (Punahou '03 of Kailua) boosted his season average to 46.5 yards per punt with a 53-yarder that pinned Hardin-Simmons at its 1-yard line. Senior defensive back Keone Tawata (Radford '04 of Honolulu) had 11 tackles for Linfield.

  • Montana-Western senior quarterback Keali'i Perbera (Saint Louis '04 of Mililani) threw a 65-yard touchdown pass with 1:57 left to beat Montana State-Northern, 45-38, Saturday. Perbera completed 21 of 31 passes for 382 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed four times for 94 yards.

  • Puget Sound senior linebacker Kainoa Higgins (Punahou '04 of Honolulu) had an interception in the Loggers' 22-12 win over Claremont-Mudd Scripps.

  • Southern Oregon freshman safety Sam Higgins (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) was named the Raiders' special teams player of the week. Higgins had three tackles in a 37-11 loss to Idaho State.

    Freshman defensive back Danson Cappo (Kamehameha '06 of Kunia) returned an interception 15 yards.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Washington sophomore libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05 of Honolulu) collected 57 digs in wins over North Florida, Jacksonville and New Orleans last weekend. Miyashiro also had eight aces, including six against North Florida.

  • St. John's junior libero Lena Yee was named MVP of the Indiana University/Adidas Classic. The Red Storm (13-2) gained two spots in this week's CSTV/AVCA Top 25 Poll to No. 21.

  • Creighton freshman Melanie Feldman (Punahou '07 of Honolulu) has appeared in four games this season with one ace.

  • Siena College junior libero Kathi Kobayashi (Punahou '05 of 'Aiea) had 16 digs against Fairfield and nine digs against Saint Peter's, both team highs, as the Saints swept both teams.

    Sophomore defensive specialist Kaui Robello (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) is also on the Siena roster.

  • Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.) senior setter Anela Iseke (Kamehameha '04 of Hau'ula) had 46 assists, six kills and nine blocks in the Boxers' sweep of Whitman Saturday.

    Freshmen Lana Carter (Lahainaluna '07 of Lahaina), Lia Nishikura (Mililani '07 of Mililani), Nicole Smith (Kamehameha-Maui '06 of Wailuku) and Christiana Chandler (Leilehua '07 of Wahiawa) are also on the Pacific roster.

    CROSS COUNTRY

  • Creighton senior Kari Tanimoto (Pearl City '04 of Waipahu) placed 63rd (24:19) at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

  • Willamette senior Carly Killam (Punahou '03 of Kailua) finished 14th (19:32) at the Bearcats' meet Saturday in Salem, Ore.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • New Mexico sophomore midfielder Markee Nobriga (Kamehameha '06 of Hale'iwa) scored the lone goal in the Lobos' 4-1 loss to Arizona Friday. Nobriga scored her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute.

    Sophomore Kiani Wong ('Iolani '05 of Honolulu) is a reserve goalkeeper for New Mexico.

  • Duke senior goalkeeper Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04 of Hawai'i Kai) did not allow a goal in Thursday's 6-0 win over Elon and Sunday's 3-1 win over Dartmouth. Lipsher has allowed just two goals this season.

  • Saint Mary's (Calif.) freshman goalkeeper Carianne Makino (Kaiser '07 of Honolulu) made six saves in a 1-0 loss to UAB Thursday.

    Saint Mary's reserve sophomore midfielder Ashley Nied (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) had a shot on goal.

    COMMITMENTS

  • Tammie Andres (Maryknoll '05 of Kapolei) has signed to play basketball at defending NAIA national champion Lambuth (Jackson, Tenn.). Andres, a junior guard, spent the past two season at Southwestern Oregon Community College.
