University of Hawai'i women's soccer coach Pinsoom Tenzing gives senior midfielder Jessica Domingo the privilege of picking and choosing when initiating set pieces.
Her decision making was superb in a 5-2 victory over Duquesne last night before 483 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Domingo tied a school record with three assists, including two on free kicks, and Taryn Fukuroku scored two goals for Hawai'i (4-0-1).
The Rainbow Wahine's first two goals came off of 35-yard free kicks by Domingo early in each half. Tehane Higa scored off the first at 2:59 and Fukuroku made it 2-0 at 45:49.
"We have X number of set plays, and she's at liberty to do what she wants to do with the ball and she does good things with the ball," Tenzing said. "That's what makes her an exceptional player."
Domingo tied the school record shared by four others, and the goals were the most scored by Hawai'i since Oct. 19 2003, against San Jose State.
On the first goal, Domingo's free kick reached Ambree Ako near the top of the penalty box, and Ako slotted the ball to a streaking Higa, who touched it past Dukes goalie Gabby Morrin.
"The first free kick was brilliant and it surprised us completely," Duquesne coach Tim Zundel.
On the second goal, Domingo's free kick arrived in front of the goal line. Mari Punzal flicked the ball to Fukuroku, who knocked it in.
"I put them into open spaces and they did a good job finishing them," Domingo said. "They do the hard work; I do the easy work, just serving the ball in."
The Dukes scored on a free kick of their own at 60:36 to make it 2-1. Audra Matthews' free kick from the right side landed in the 6-yard box and at the feet of several players, including UH goalie Kori Lu. Kimberly Roncase controlled the ball and chipped it into the goal.
Hawai'i put the game away on goals by Punzal and Fukuroku 76 seconds apart.
Domingo passed to Fukuroku, who saved the ball from going over the end line on the right side. Fukuroku sent a cross to Punzal, who headed in the ball at 64:29.
Fukuroku made it 4-1 at 65:45 by kicking in a rebound off a shot by Kristen Oshiro.
Matthews scored on a breakaway at 81:59 to make it 4-2, and Hawai'i's Emma Makepa-Foley scored her first career goal at 84:55 to cap the scoring.
The Rainbow Wahine's Koren Takeyama (14:30) and Shawn Higa (13:06) made their first appearances of the season. Both had been out with leg injuries.
Hawai'i had 12 shots on goal, while Duquesne (3-2) had only three.
For the season, Hawai'i has outscored its opponents, 16-5.
"For once we're actually doing as well as we should," Domingo said. "We're still not playing the level of soccer we should be. It's still a little messy, we need to clean it up, but for now we're happy with it."
The teams will play again tomorrow at 4 p.m.
