Kaua'i's Andy Irons defeated Sunny Garcia of the North Shore yesterday in a battle of former world champions during the second round of the Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles, Calif.

Irons, the three-time former ASP world champion, scored 14.66 points to Garcia's 10.77 in the Fosters ASP World Tour event featuring the top 45 surfers in the world. Garcia was one of three wildcard entries.

"Me and Sunny talked a lot out there, it's really good to see him, I haven't seen him in ages," Irons said in a story at the meet's Web site. "We've surfed together a lot in the past 10 years and hopefully he gets that wildcard to get back on tour. We started catching up a little too much. I started thinking, wait I've got to surf a heat here. I have to get back in the game right now."

Hawai'i's Pancho Sullivan also advanced with a second-round victory over Mark Occhilupo of Australia, 13.17-12.44.

The two other wildcards pulled off upsets: Dane Reynolds of California beat current world No. 2 Taj Burrow of Australia and Jordy Smith of South Africa eliminated world No. 5 Joel Parkinson of Australia.

Smith meets Irons in Round 3.

TENNIS

WAILEA HONORED

Wailea Tennis Club has earned an Outstanding Facility Award from the United States Tennis Association for 2007.

The award program recognizes tennis facilities that maintain high standards and whose efforts have made a positive statement about the vitality of the game. There were 18 facilities honored in four categories — Large Tennis Center, Small Tennis Center, Private Facility and Collegiate Tennis Center.

"This is way over the top for us," said Cathy Nicoloff, Wailea Tennis Club director. "Considering the vast number of tennis centers across the country, to be singled out for recognition like this is an unbelievable honor."

In addition to its normal business activities, Wailea Tennis Club works with the Maui District Tennis Association to promote tennis on the island, participates in the USTA's 1-2-3 adult beginner learning program, and sponsors junior tennis activities.

The club also plays an instrumental role in bringing some of the world's most renowned tennis pros and coaches for public events on Maui, including the world's top doubles team — the Bryan brothers — and their coach/father Wayne Bryan, competitors in the Wailea Men's Challenger, and tennis stars Tracy Austin and Luke Jensen.

Next month, former U.S. Davis Cup captain Tom Gullickson, Jonathan Stark and Mats Wilander will be at Wailea for an instructional Wailea Fantasy Camp and to play an exhibition match.

Nicoloff was previously honored as USPTA Hawai'i Division Pro of the Year for 2001, Hall of Fame inductee at Westminster College in Pennsylvania in 2002, USTA Service Award recipient in 2005, and USPTA Hawai'i Division Professional of the Year in 2006. Last year, Wailea Tennis Club was named Facility of the Year by the USPTA Hawai'i Division.
