Pattachia pulls upset in surf

Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. won their respective first-round heats of the Boost Mobile Pro men's surfing contest yesterday at San Clemente, Calif.
The opening day of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at the Lower Trestles surf spot.
Patacchia was one of the standouts of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 15.76. He upset Australia's Taj Burrow, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world.
As first-round winners, Patacchia and Irons advanced directly to the third round.
Fellow Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Pancho Sullivan and Sunny Garcia did not win their first-round heats, and will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin.
ULTIMATE FIGHTING
TORRES TKO'D
Hawai'i's Anthony Torres lost to France's Jess Liaudin on the undercard of an Ultimate Fighting Championship event Saturday.
Liaudin defeated Torres by technical knockout in the first round of the UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion card at London, England.
Liaudin landed several punches to Torres' face and head, prompting the referee to stop the bout at 4 minutes, 10 seconds, into the first round.
In the main event, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson defeated Dan Henderson by unanimous decision to retain the UFC light heavyweight championship.
GOLF
SONNENBERG PREVAILS
Eric Sonnenberg shot a final-round 2-over-par 72 yesterday to capture the Amatour Hawai'i Olomana Shootout at the Olomana Golf Links.
Sonnenberg, who opened with a 6-under 64, finished with a 4-under 136 total. His nine-stroke victory and final total were both Amatour Hawai'i records.
Christian Akau (70), Vance Watabu (72), Mike Kawate (71) and Shannon Tanoue (74) tied for second at 145.
NO. 8 SEEDS WIN
Eighth seeds John-David Nako and Jameson Keiley captured their respective divisions yesterday in the Kaanapali Golf Resort's Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Match Play Championships.
Nako beat Kelii Dias, 2 and 1, to win the boys 15-18 age division, and Keiley beat Rudy Cabalar, 4 and 3, to win the 11-12 division. Keiley's brother, Justin, won the 13-14 division, beating Alex Chiarella, 5 and 3, in the final.
In girls finals, Anna Jang beat Kelcie Kawano, 2-up, to win the 15-18 division; Kelli Oride beat Cassy Isagawa, 1-up, to win the 13-14 division, and Alexandra Kaui beat Eimi Koga, 2 and 1, to win the 11-12 division.
RUNNING
EAGAR, ROSS PLACE FIRST
David Eagar and Rachel Ross were the first male and female finishers in yesterday's Windward Half Marathon.
Eagar completed the Kailua course in 1 hour, 19 minutes, 34 seconds. Andrew Taylor (1:20:39.7) finished second and Jeff Tomaszewski (1:22:06.0) third.
Ross finished in 1:30:52.4, followed by Julie Doheney (1:35:10.4) and Heather Pine (1:37:02.2).
Pete Boksanski and Maile Scarpino won the companion 5-kilometer race.
Boksanski finished in 17:33.1, followed by John Smith (18:00.3) and Scot Muraoka (18:23.6).
Scarpino finished in 20:07.1, followed by Laura Kloepper (22:40.3) and Asti Tomsic (22:52.5).
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
LAMBERT LENDS HAND
John Hyden, with a boost from former Olympic teammate Mike Lambert, captured the God of the Beach tournament Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Hyden, seeded seventh in the AVP tournament, teamed with Punahou alum Lambert to beat Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal, 16-21, 21-16, 15-9, in the final at Caesar's Palace.
Lambert, who won the God of Beach title in 2005, had 20 kills while hitting .418 and posted a match-high seven blocks.
Hyden won $24,500. Lambert finished seventh and won $11,250. Another Punahou alum, Stein Metzger, placed eighth and won $3,000.
