HAWAII BRIEFS
Speed played role in fatal car crash

Advertiser Staff

Speed was probably a factor in a single-car accident late Friday night that claimed the life of a 47-year-old Honolulu man, police said yesterday.

The driver of the car was headed north on Punchbowl Street just past Lusitana Street when he crossed into the southbound lanes, went up a dirt embankment and struck a concrete structure that is part of H-1 Freeway, police said.

The driver of the two-door Toyota was taken to The Queen's Medical Center where he later died, police said.

It was not known whether alcohol was involved in the crash, the 46th traffic fatality on O'ahu this year. Last year at the same time, there were 67 traffic fatalities, police said.
