Just when Moanalua started to make it a game, Kalaheo shifted into overdrive and cruised to victory.

Kalaheo rushed for four touchdowns, including a run of 21 unanswered points in the second half, in a 28-14 victory over Moanalua last night at Kailua.

It was the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East football opener for both teams.

Cody vonAppen scored on a pair of 1-yard quarterback sneaks, and Bruce Andrews caught four passes for 110 yards for Kalaheo (3-0, 1-0).

Moanalua quarterback Jordan Monico scored on a 39-yard option keeper down the right sideline to cut Na Menehune's deficit to 7-6 with 6:28 left in the third.

Na Menehune (1-1-1, 0-1) were called for excessive celebration after the play, so the PAT was moved back 15 yards. A defensive encroachment penalty moved it 5 yards closer, but the 30-yard attempt sailed wide right.

Kalaheo answered with vonAppen's 1-yard sneak with 15.5 seconds left in the third to make it 14-6. Andrews caught a 30-yard pass from vonAppen earlier in the drive to put the ball at the Moanalua 13.

VonAppen added a 1-yard sneak midway through the fourth and Vince Santiago scored on a 35-yard run — his only carry of the game — with 4:23 left.

"We didn't play good football in the first half and when they got within 7-6, we just kicked it into overdrive and played better football," Kalaheo coach Chris Mellor said.

The Mustangs racked up 252 yards on the ground and vonAppen was 9 of 20 for 191 yards.

"Coach Chris just puts us in the best situation to make plays," said vonAppen, who directed the Mustangs' veer-option offense.

Kalaheo gained 294 yards in the second half.

"You saw signs of what we can do when we're hitting on all cylinders. It just took us a while," Mellor said.

Moanalua gained 181 total yards, and Monico completed only four passes for 98 yards with two interceptions.

"It's kind of tough when your defense is on the field the whole game," Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez said. "With four minutes left in the game we were on the field for 76 plays. You're going to get a little tired."

It was Monico's first game this season because of a sprained knee.

"He was a little rusty I would have to say," Martinez said. "But we love him; he'll bounce back. He's a great competitor, a champion and he has a big heart."

Andrews' 26- and 17-yard receptions from vonAppen set up the only score of the first half — an 8-yard run by running back Phil Tauai with 17 seconds remaining before halftime. Nathan Johnson added the extra point for a 7-0 Kalaheo lead.

"Cody is a great QB. I'm just thankful to him that he throws me the ball," Andrews said. "He found me when I was open."
