  • Nancy Lewis, director of the East-West Center's Research Program, was elected vice president of the Pacific Science Association at its recently concluded conference in Okinawa, Japan. She most recently represented the PSA as its secretary-general and treasurer.

    The PSA is the oldest interdisciplinary science organization in the Asia Pacific region. With its secretariat headquartered at Bishop Museum, the group facilitates international research and collaboration throughout the region.

  • Serette Kaminski, daughter of Kealakehe Intermediate teachers Antoinette Winterkamp and Robert Kaminski, of Kailua, Kona, Hawai'i, has been accepted into the Peace Corps. A graduate of Konawaena High School and the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, she holds a master of public administration and master of science in political science from Suffolks University in Boston.

    During the first three months of her service, Kaminski will live with a host family in Niger, Africa, near the capital of Niaamey, to become fully immersed in the country's language and culture.

  • June 21 marked the one-year anniversary of the dedication of the U.S. Army Private Masato "Curly" Nakae Freedom Square at Camp Darby, Livorno, Italy. The monument was erected in memory of Nakae, of Company A, 100th Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, for his heroic actions in combat on Aug. 19, 1944 against the German forces in the Pisa area. Nakae won the Medal of Honor.

  • Goodwill Industries has promoted three staff members to senior management positions. They are: chief operating officer, Linda Lewis Ezuka, who will oversee Goodwill's human services division, quality assurance program and administrative management; vice president of retail sales, Rafael Escalera, in charge of Goodwill's eight retail stores on O'ahu and in Hilo and the agency's donations operations; and vice president of human resources, Carrie Perdue-Graham, who will oversee staff training, internal communications and the agency safety program.

  • Maui Community College student, Jessica "Mira" Allen, is one of five college students nationwide to have received the 2007 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award from Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,000 college and university presidents.

    "Jessica's contributions to her college and larger community offer an exemplary model for how one student might have a profound impact on her expanding environment of influence," said MCC Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto. "Out of a simple but deep desire to assist others in their quest for success, her service is an example for all of us."

  • Representative Rida Cabanilla (D-42nd Waipahu, Honouliuli, 'Ewa) was selected to attend the National Summit on Public Health Legal Preparedness hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, held in mid-June. The purpose of the summit was to create a shared agenda for action to strengthen legal preparedness for public health emergencies of all kinds.

    "State legislators are action-oriented and have a unique ability to translate science and best practices into effective policy...," said Tony Mouton, co-director of the Public Health and Law Program of the CDC.

  • Chantelle Apostadiro, a senior at Wai'anae High School, was one of 1,900 student council leaders and student activity advisers who attended the 71st Annual National Association of Student Councils national conference in mid-June in Overland Park, Kan. The conference, administered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, offers training in basic and advanced leadership, communication skills and dealing with diversity.

  • During the 143rd national convention of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, David Oberheu of Honolulu Elks Lodge 616 was appointed to the national auditing and accounting committee. In this position, he will serve the national governing body of the Elks, known as the Grand Lodge, by working with certified public accountants to examine the books, records and accounts for every level of the Elks organization.
