State gives $1.2M for clinic, park

A second Kokua Kalihi Valley health center will open in January 2009 at the site of the old P&P Supermarket on North School Street.

The community-organized and -operated nonprofit provides services to low-income residents, ranging from general medicine and dental services to family planning and elder care.

"Renovations are needed to provide adequate facilities for the increasing numbers of low-income residents who rely on Kokua Kalihi Valley's medical, dental and behavioral health care services," said Gov. Linda Lingle in a release.

The state is providing $800,000 for the renovation.

Founded in 1972, Kokua Kalihi Valley has strived to provide services to the growing populations of Asian and Pacific Island residents, many of whom live in public housing projects in the area.

The nonprofit started in two renovated Army trailers in the back parking lot of Kalihi Baptist Church and has since expanded to six locations — with another new health center on the way.

The nonprofit also leases 100 acres of state park land used for exercise, cultural practices and community gardening. Kalihi Valley Nature Park will see $200,000 to improve the green space, protect cultural and archaeological sites and make other infrastructure improvements.

"Installation of walking and hiking paths as well as bike trails at the Kalihi Valley Nature Park promotes a healthy lifestyle while helping to preserve our cultural and natural resources," Lingle said.

Another $200,000 will be used to create more ADA-compliant parking stalls and entryways.
