KAILUA — James Smith made an interception at his own 2-yard line and returned it 49 yards with 28 seconds remaining last night to help visiting Farrington hold off Kailua, 13-7, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action.

Farrington improved to 1-1-1 overall after the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division opener for both teams. Kailua fell to 0-3 overall.

The Surfriders almost completed an improbable 99-yard drive on their final possession, before Smith's interception on fourth-and-goal from the 8.

"The quarterback was scrambling, and we thought he might run again," Smith said of Kenny Ellis, who had gained big yardage on keepers during the drive and rolled to his right on the decisive play. "But he saw the receiver by himself, and I read his eyes."

Smith picked off the lob at the 2 and ran down the left sideline before finally being chased down at midfield. With Kailua out of timeouts, Farrington took a knee to run out the clock.

Both teams struggled with penalties the entire game, and the Surfriders' final one proved costly. After being pinned on their own 1-yard line on a punt, Kailua marched down the field and gained a first-and-goal on the 5, and then Kaleo Wong ran it to the 3.

But on second down, the Surfriders were whistled for a false start, and Ellis was sacked for a loss of seven on the next play.

"That last (penalty) was a metaphor for our whole game," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "When we've got first-and-goal, we've got punch those in. But we've just been making way too many mental mistakes."

Ellis scrambled back to the 8 on third down, giving Kailua one last chance. But Smith leaped in front of the intended receiver to make the crucial pick.

"It seemed like our kids were a little nervous on that last drive, but they stepped up when they needed to," Governors coach Randall Okimoto said. "Those are all returnees in our secondary, and we expect a lot out of them."

Farrington scored first on the final play of the first quarter, with Alefosiu Iu connected with Matt Stowers on a 10-yard pass into the left corner of the end zone. The Surfriders tied it at 7-7 with 6:26 left in the third quarter after Kaleo Wong's 2-yard touchdown run.

Wong finished with 107 yards on 21 carries.

The Governors were penalized 11 times for 110 yards, and Kailua was flagged 10 times for 70 yards.
