Judy Louie, who grew up in Honolulu and now lives in Southern California, has been selected to play on the United States team at the Alice Marble Cup international tennis competition. The event, for women 60 and older, will be played in Christchurch, New Zealand, Nov. 26 to Dec. 1.

The U.S. was sixth last year in Turkey, with Louie also on the team. She is ranked fourth in the nation, in singles and doubles, in Women's 60s.

Louie teamed with Mary Delay to win the National Indoors doubles championship this year and last. She won the National Claycourts with Brenda Carter last year and was singles runnerup in both the claycourts and grasscourts.

Louie graduated from the University of Hawai'i in 1967. She is now a tennis teacher in Corona Del Mar. Both her sons play tennis, with Casey a former member of the Cal team.

The other three members of the U.S. team are Carter, from South Carolina, and Florida's Betty Wachob and Carol Clay.

SAWICKI WINS BIKE RACE

Mililani's Pua Sawicki overcame three flats to capture the women's division at the Baja Ultra Endurance 100K Mountain Bike Race in Ensenada, Mexico, last weekend.

Sawicki was forced to walk for nearly an hour after her second flat before getting a replacement tube.

France's Miguel Martinez won the men's race in a time of 4 hours, 21 minutes, and Sawicki finished an hour behind, taking 12th overall.

SWANSON GOLD IN JUDO

Melinda Swanson, a University of Hawai'i student, captured gold in the women's open division at the 2007 U.S. Open Judo Championships in Duluth, Ga., on Oct. 19 and 20.

Swanson threw Emily Lilly of Camarillo, Calif., for ippon in the first minute the title match for the victory. Swanson also finished tied for third in the women's 78-plus kilogram division.

The U.S. Open serves as a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
