Center offers cancer patients key service

The new comprehensive cancer center at The Queen's Medical Center is a much-needed addition to Hawai'i's healthcare system.
The $6 million center opening Nov. 7 will help bring together a spectrum of services for patients dealing with the devastating diagnosis of cancer, combining cutting-edge equipment with counseling and other services to help patients weather the storm.
Given Hawai'i's aging population, experts say the number of people diagnosed with cancer is expected to double in the next 30 years. So access to treatment and patient services here at home is key.
One aspect of the Queen's model that is particularly impressive are "navigators." These are the folks assigned to patients to help guide them through the maze involved in their care and treatment. They deal with a variety of issues — from childcare to transportation to coordinating physician visits — so patients can focus on fighting cancer.
"This relieves their anxiety; if they are under less stress they are able to deal with what matters," said Dr. Diane Thompson, the center's director.
And that's no small matter, when you're in the fight of your life.
