Pac-Five's offense took care of the scoring and its defense kept 'Iolani off the scoreboard in the second half.

The Wolf Pack defense was key in a 21-14 win over the Raiders in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football game Saturday at Aloha Stadium. The last time Pac-Five defeated 'Iolani was Nov. 11, 1995.

"Anybody who shuts out 'Iolani for two quarters, that's really good," Pac-Five coach Kip Botelho said. "They put up over 30 points against Saint Louis ... every week they put up points.

"I'm proud of our defense. In the second half, they shut them down. That was key. We didn't turn the ball over, we took care of the ball and ran the clock. It was a good team win."

Botelho credited his defense — particularly linemen Aaron Tipoti and Alika Vaiese, and backs Ridge Dunlap and Ku Botelho — for keeping 'Iolani grounded. The Wolf Pack did all of its scoring in the second quarter to lead 21-14 at halftime, then stopped Raiders quarterback Kela Marciel in the second half. Sticking to its defensive game plan, the Wolf Pack had three players pressure the quarterback with the other eight players covering the rest.

"It's hard to blitz them," coach Botelho said. "The quarterback is so good. We needed to cover and get pressure."

The win was the first for Pac-Five (2-6, 1-4 ILH) since it defeated Radford in its non-league opener in August.

"This win was big," coach Botelho said. "The guys work hard but they always come up short. The win was good for our team and program."

Botelho also pointed out the win keeps Pac-Five alive in the ILH D-II race with Damien and 'Iolani.
