The Poakalani/Serrao family, known for its quilting prowess, has a new book out featuring the memories, tips and patterns of four of its members — Poakalani Serrao, John Serrao, Raelene Correia and Cissy Serrao. Called "The Hawaiian Quilt: The Tradition Continues" (Mutual Publishing, paper, $16.95), the book includes full-color photographs and thoughtful commentary, some of it practical, some of it whimsical or philosophical. Among my favorites: "Without a story, quilts are just blankets on a bed."

TUNE IN FOR LOCAL LOOK AT BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS

Breast cancer is a hot topic this month: "On Board for a Cure," a locally produced hour-long documentary on breast cancer survivors, airs at 9 tonight and at 7 p.m. Saturday on KHON. And if you haven't had your annual mammogram yet, UHA, a local health plan, has stepped it up a notch, running TV ads urging women to get their mammograms and offering physicians incentives for screenings.
