Mop-up was under way yesterday after firefighters successfully contained a pesky brushfire in Makaha.
HFD Capt. Frank Johnson said firefighters had the fire 85 percent contained last night. "We're still working on the hot spots," he said.
Three engine companies were on scene to clean up smoky spots and hose down smoldering tree stumps. The cause of the fire that flared up again on Saturday night remains unknown. Firefighters say the blaze scorched about 300 acres.
The fire began Friday and burned close enough to the Makaha Valley Towers apartments Friday afternoon that fire officials advised residents to leave the buildings.
