Ching leads OCC tourney by five

Punahou School senior Alex Ching shot a 4-under-par 67 to pad his lead to five strokes heading into today's final round of the OCC Men's Invitational at the Oahu Country Club.

Ching's 36-hole score of 11-under 131 is five shots better than Lorens Chan, who shot a 70 for a 136 total yesterday.

Ching, who will attend the University of San Diego next fall on a golf scholarship, is within range of the tournament record of 12-under 201 set by PGA Tour player and Punahou alum Parker McLachlin in 2001.

In the Senior (55 and older) Division, George Yamamoto won his fourth title by beating Daniel Park by a stroke. Yamamoto shot a 4-over 75 for a 151 total; Park shot a 77—152.

The Oahu Country Club team of Ching, Kop, Sam Pratt, Marc Rosen and Jeff Weinstein won the 36-hole team title with a 14-over 582.


BASEBALL

CANEFIRES, HONU WIN

Steve Johnson tossed five shutout innings to lead the West Oahu CaneFires past the Honolulu Sharks, 7-2, yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Johnson (2-1) yielded just two hits and a walk, striking out five, for the win against Honolulu (9-7).

Ian Gac, Todd Martin and Brian Jeroloman each had two hits for West Oahu (5-11).

In another game, Brett Sinkbeil and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the North Shore Honu beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 8-1, at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Sinkbeil (2-0) allowed three hits, one walk and one unearned run in five innings. He struck out four.

Reliever Kevin Roberts tossed one scoreless frame with two strikeouts, and Sean Walker pitched the final three innings for his first save. He struck out four.

Jamie Romak drove in three runs, and Stephen Chapman added two RBIs for North Shore (11-6). Antoan Richardson had two hits for Waikiki (8-9).


VOLLEYBALL

HPU WINS IN FOUR

Antje Buskies had 11 kills and Cari Kahn added nine kills, four assists and 10 digs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Notre Dame de Namur 30-28, 30-16, 23-30, 30-21 in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match yesterday at St. Andrew's Priory.

Jackie Tedesco had a match-high 22 digs for the Sea Warriors (10-12 overall, 4-6 PacWest). Marissa Miller led the visiting Argos (8-14, 3-6) with 14 kills.
