Rig overturns on Nimitz, tying up traffic for hours

Advertiser Staff

A tractor-trailer rig overturned yesterday on Nimitz Highway at the entrance to Sand Island Access Road, snarling traffic for more than four hours.

Police said the truck was turning left from Sand Island Access Road onto Nimitz at 11:07 a.m. when its load shifted, causing the rig to tip over. A metal pole with an arm that holds traffic signals fell.

Police closed two makai-bound lanes on Sand Island Access Road and two westbound lanes on Nimitz until the truck could be righted. At 12:58 p.m., all westbound lanes of Nimitz were closed and traffic was rerouted onto Pu'uhale Road to allow officials to repair the damaged traffic signals and pole.

The state owns the pole, while the traffic lights belong to the city.

The roadway was reopened at 3:25 p.m.

The 52-year-old man who was driving the truck was treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released, city emergency services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.
