TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Mad Men" season finale, 7 p.m., AMC. This series often seems distant and detached. Set at a 1960s ad agency, it's filled with men who repress their emotions and cheat on their wives. Don, the central character, also hides his impoverished childhood. Now all of that pays off in a superb hour. Don is ducking out on Thanksgiving, at the same time that he prepares a family-oriented sales pitch. One marriage has already crumbled; others are wobbling. For Peggy, there are huge changes, one of them stretching credibility. For Don, there's an amazing sales pitch and then a double ending — one imagined, one real, both emotional.
"Viva Laughlin" debut, 9 p.m., CBS. A British series about a casino owner had its characters break into pop songs. CBS bought the rights and, bizarrely, dumped most of the music. Instead, characters sort of sing along with Elvis and others. It's a bland compromise; viewers are left with a flash setting, an unlikable lead character and an opening plot that revolves around sheer luck.
OF NOTE
"Run, Granny, Run," 6 p.m., HBO. When New Hampshire's Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate suddenly dropped out, Doris Haddock stepped in. She was 94, a great-grandmother. She had seen her late husband and their daughter sink into Alzheimer's disease, but she remained vibrant. This documentary captures her weaknesses and her stirring strength, against impossible odds.
"My Name is Earl," 7 p.m., NBC. When Earl takes a creative writing class in jail, others concoct stories — Catalina even acts hers out, as a soap opera.
"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," 7 p.m., FX. With a serial killer loose, reactions vary. Some people stalk Mac, assuming he's the killer; others use Dee as bait. The result is occasionally overblown, but the final minutes are hilarious.
"30 Rock," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Jack wants a promotion so desperately that he hires a private-eye to find any flaws in his own past. Meanwhile, Tracy's wife (played by Sherri Shepherd) plans to be there all day, to watch him.
"The Office," 8 p.m., NBC. With Jan renovating the condo, Michael sinks deeper in debt; now he's even trying to get loans from his staffers. Meanwhile, Pam and Jim visit Dwight's family farm, which is now a bed-and-breakfast.
"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. Adele Webber rushes her niece to the hospital. Meanwhile, a much older intern (played by Edward Herrmann, 64) makes a key mistake.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. A young man with feminine features has been found hanged.
"ER," 9 p.m., NBC. The emergency room becomes a beauty salon, when a former patient gives makeovers. Also, there are troubles for Abby's baby and Pratt's brother.
