Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i forward Ambree Ako and goalkeeper Kori Lu were named Western Athletic Conference soccer offensive and defensive Players of the Week, the conference announced yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine won consecutive home games last week against Nevada and Fresno State, who were the top two preseason favorites in the WAC.

Ako, a sophomore from 'Aiea, scored three goals and had one assist last week. She had a goal and assist in a 3-0 victory over Nevada and two first-half goals in a 2-1 win over Fresno State.

Lu, a junior from San Clemente, Calif., earned her third shutout of the season against Nevada. She is the UH leader in career solo shutouts with 10. She also had three saves against Fresno State.

UH has won seven in a row at home this season.

It was the first WAC Player of the Week honor for both players.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-3-2 overall and 2-0 in the WAC) begin a three-match road trip Sunday at San Jose State. They also have matches at Utah State and Louisiana Tech.

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team was in second place yesterday after the first round of the Aztec Fall Classic at Salt Creek Golf Course in Chula Vista, Claif.

UH's Lisa Kajiwara shot an even-par 72 and is tied for second with Kim Lorenzana of UC Irvine. Kajiwara and Lorenzana are two shots behind leader Patty Chawalitmetha of UC Irvine.

Two players with Hawai'i ties also were tied for 18th, Kaitlin Miyajima, a Baldwin High alum who plays for San Diego State and Nevada's Jennie Pleas, a Kaua'i High alum.

The tournament ends today.
