Bold colors of Fall

While Island women bypass the cold-weather fashions of fall — fur bomber jackets, thigh-high boots and leather gloves just don’t cut it in 78-degree weather — the new makeup trends are something we can all embrace. Smoky eyes, high-impact lips (but not at the same time), dark nails and statement-making eyebrows look fresh now. Here’s what several international makeup mavens are recommending.
TRISH MCEVOY
Known for her pragmatic approach to makeup, as exemplified in her clever Day Planner makeup carrying kit, London-based Trish McEvoy shared her fall tips via e-mail.

Take on fall trends: Soft focus, a fresh, soft, natural look.
Three must-haves for fall:
A lipstick with a pop of color in a sheer texture.
Platinum, gunmetal or navy eye shadow.
Mineral powder foundation to give skin a flawless finish.
What's a no-no now? Heavy foundation, unblended color, messy eye makeup, matte opaque lip color and ungroomed eyebrows.
LAURA MERCIER
Laura Mercier's global makeup artist Barbara Laurino, who did makeup at Paris Fashion Week and for the Emmys, also chimed in via e-mail.
Get at: Sephora and Neiman Marcus
Take on fall trends: Every woman can have the dark, smoky, smoldering look from the catwalks, translating it in a way that suits her style and lifestyle. Brows are definitely more defined and a main focus of the face; they are neither thick nor thin; just well-groomed and perfectly shaped.
Three must-haves for fall:
Brow pencil for well-defined brows.
One extremely dark eye shadow, preferably in blue.
A rich red or berry lipstick for those days when a smoky eye is out of the question.
What's a no-no now? Combining a dark lipstick and a smoky eye can date a woman. Summer had earth washes of color and a bronzed, healthy glow. Fall has more intensity on the eyes and a barely-there cheek.
SHU UEMURA
J.P. McCary, Shu Uemura's lead principal makeup artist, has worked in more than 23 countries and his work has appeared in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and InStyle.
Via e-mail, McCary said that fall is about three key differences: A stronger eye, using dark blues and purples and false eyelashes, semi-matte skin, with the T-zone matte and the cheeks with a soft, beautiful sheen, and brown and amber on the cheeks to define the cheekbone, topping it off with a brighter orange right on the apple of the cheek to bring color to the face.

Take on fall trends: Fall is all about the empowered eye.
Three must-haves for fall:
False eyelashes: The latest are wispier-looking, such as our Smoky Layers Lashes, worn by Alicia Keyes and Fergie.
Flawless skin that begins with cleansing.
Red lipstick, ranging from a classic crimson to a beautiful wine red. Red 165 was created by Shu Uemura to be the most universal red for all women.
What's a no-no now? The biggest mistake women make is to not focus on the skin. Women tend to focus more on the colors and less on their skin care and foundation! This is a way to date yourself because women in the know understand that skin is the most important thing. Your makeup truly begins with skin care.
