Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for alleged drunken driving last week, seven of whom were involved in traffic crashes and three younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,019 DUI arrests, compared with 968 during the same period last year — an increase of 5 percent.

Big Island police said there have been 1,610 major accidents so far this year, compared with 1,936 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.
