Prudential Financial Inc. employees and their families from Honolulu will volunteer with Friends of the Missing Child Center - Hawai'i as part of the 12th anniversary of PRUDENTIAL GLOBAL VOLUNTEER DAY. The local effort to prevent abduction of children by helping families fill out identification packets and fingerprinting will be one of about 800 variously themed projects in more than 12 countries, ranging from rebuilding homes for the elderly to preparing meals at natural disaster shelters. Since 1995, more than 250,000 volunteers have devoted over 1.5 million hours in over 6,800 projects worldwide. This year, some 32,000 volunteers are expected to participate worldwide. The local child identification project is scheduled 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the state Capitol today.
The Honolulu Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce will host the 2007 YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CONVENTION Next Saturday, a day of workshops, job fair and exhibition and social mixer. Themed "Developing an Innovative Generation," the convention will focus on needed skills and challenges for the upcoming workforce generation, especially in the areas of marketability, competitiveness and career tools. About 150 young professionals and college students are expected to network with other peers, established professionals in various fields and chamber members. It is scheduled from 2 p.m. registration, 3 p.m. convention, at Hilton Hawaiian Village. Fees; college students, Jaycee members and young professional prices available. The legacy of a local public relations veteran, the late Eileen Mortensen, will continue in her well-known public relations course for local clubs and organizations by the University of Hawai'i's Outreach College, beginning today. The course, "HOW TO MAKE THE NEWS," taught by veteran Honolulu journalist Peter Rosegg, will be offered from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. today and next Saturday in Webster Hall, room 103, on the UH-Manoa campus. A free "public relations consultation" will be offered as part of a two-part publicity and public relations course especially intended for the small-business operator, officers of nonprofit organizations, or club and organizations' publicity chairs. Rosegg, senior communications specialist with Hawaiian Electric Co., is a former Honolulu Advertiser reporter and editorial writer; speech writer and communications specialist for former Gov. Ben Cayetano, and a public relations veteran. He has also taught journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing, public speaking and writing at both UH and Hawai'i Pacific University. Fee: $95.
