Gamel's grand slam lifts Honu

Mat Gamel hit a grand slam in the fifth inning as the North Shore Honu beat the Honolulu Sharks, 7-3, last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Maui's Iron Maehara Stadium.

It was Gamel's third homer of the season for the Honu.

Michael Griffin and Jonathan Lucroy each had three hits for the Honu.


GOLF

MIYAJIMA TIED FOR NINTH

Maui's Shayna Miyajima is tied for ninth after a third-round 72 yesterday at the Venice LPGA Sectional Qualifying School in Florida.

Miyajima is at even-par 216 entering today's final round. Na-Yeon Choi shot a 71 yesterday for a two-shot lead at 208.

The top 30 players and ties advance to the LPGA Final Qualifying School next month.


TENNIS

UH PLAYERS OUSTED

University of Hawai'i's Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann were eliminated yesterday at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championship tennis tournament at Tulsa, Okla.

Weber, ranked No. 28 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, beat Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round, then lost to No. 15 Ivan Puchkarov of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.

Heinemann, ranked No. 50, lost to No. 88 Dominik Daescu of Oklahoma, 6-3, 7-5, in the first round.


SOCCER

UH WOMEN FALL ON ROAD

Loyola Marymount scored a pair of second-half goals in a 2-0 win over Hawai'i yesterday in Los Angeles.

Hawai'i fell to 7-3-1.

Katie Osbourne scored in the 57th minute and Jessica Sharpe added another in the 80th minute for the Lions (7-3-1).

In other matches:

Dustin Daley and Daniel Cook scored two goals apiece as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade 7-0, in a men's match at Kea'au. ... Karen Weatherby and Cherise Lee scored early in the second half as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade, 2-0, in the women's match. ... Thimo Langner had two goals and Akahide Adachi contributed two assists as Hawai'i Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-1, at HPU's Windward campus. ... Jill Haar and Kahanu Ah Puck scored as BYUH beat HPU, 2-0, in the women's match.
