OHA approves $6M in grants

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board of Trustees yesterday approved about $6 million in grants to support a total of 12 programs serving Native Hawaiians.
It is the largest amount committed by OHA's board at a single meeting. The money will support projects ranging from transitional housing and the construction of a community kitchen to dyslexia education and the training of teachers serving Hawaiian communities.
The largest individual award was $1,225,724 to Kahikolu 'Ohana Hale O Wai'anae to support a new transitional housing and vocational education shelter/center.
The University of Hawai'i Center for Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Education received $750,000 to train teachers for Hawaiian communities, while the UH law school's Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law received $630,000.
