The last time Saint Louis played Leilehua in a championship setting was when the Mules won the 1984 O'ahu Prep Bowl, 10-0.
The two will meet Friday for the First Hawaiian Bank Division I state football championship at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is 8 p.m.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Crusaders (11-0), ranked first in The Advertiser Top 10, enter as the only undefeated team in the state. The O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red champion Mules (9-4), ranked second in the state, have not lost since their regular season finale to Campbell, 22-21, on Oct. 12.
The Mules are seeking their first state title, while the Crusaders are looking for their third crown, but first since 2002. Saint Louis lost last year's title game to Kahuku, 7-6. The Mules' previous appearance in the state title game came in 2004 when they lost to Kamehameha, 28-7.
In the Division II championship, the Maui Interscholastic League will try to make it two in a row when its league champion Lahainaluna (9-1) plays ILH champion 'Iolani (5-6) 5 p.m. Friday.
The Lunas, who were in Division I last year, will try to pick up where King Kekaulike left off. Na Ali'i beat Kaua'i last year, 33-20, to become the first Neighbor Island state football champion. King Kekaulike was promoted to Division I. 'Iolani is seeking its second title in three years.
In both championships, there isn't much history between the teams. The Crusaders own a 5-3 lead, winning their previous two meetings, 20-0 and 28-0, in nonleague games in 2006 and 1993, respectively. Besides the Prep Bowl win, Leilehua beat the Crusaders in nonleague games, 35-7, in 1975 and 12-8 in 1959. Digging deeper, the Crusaders beat the Mules from 1936 to 1938 in ILH regular season games. Before the inception of what is known as the OIA today, the Mules were members of the ILH during those three years.
'Iolani and Lahainaluna have even less of a history. The Raiders have won all four meetings by scores of 35-6 (1996), 41-0 (1994), 2-0 (1960) and 20-0 (1959). All were nonleague games.
OC 16 will televise both championships on a next-day delayed basis.
